What is the Weather Like in the Black Hills?

If you’re planning a vacation to the Black Hills, you’re probably going to want to know what kind of weather you’re in for. Black Hills weather lends itself to four distinct seasons, but no matter when you visit, there’s plenty to take advantage of! Here is a breakdown of what you can expect year-round when you stay in one of our cabin rentals in the Black Hills.

Climate Overview

Spring

During the spring in Black Hills, you might be surprised to learn that the area experiences quite a bit of snow! If you’re staying in Black Hills in the spring months of March, April, and May, expect high temperatures in the 50s and low temperatures as cold as 20°! Obviously, the closer you get to summertime, the warmer the temperatures will be, but you’ll still want to be aware of the cold weather in the evenings and early mornings.

Summer

As you might expect, summer in the Black Hills tends to be the warmest time of year. Between the months of June, July, and August, expect high temperatures in the 80s and low temperatures in the 50s. This is a much more bearable time of year to explore all the incredible outdoor activities in the area!

Fall

If you head out to take part in some Black Hills fall activities, you will be amazed at the beauty that occurs when the leaves change. During the months of September, October, and November, high temperatures can range throughout the fifties and sixties, while low temperatures stay in the thirties and forties. You can expect warmer temperatures toward the beginning of the season, but as November comes, you’ll start to feel the effects of the imminent winter.

Winter

Winter in Black Hills is a gorgeous time of year, but it’s not for the faint of heart. The months of December, January, and February bring high temperatures in the 30s and low temperatures as low as the teens. If you are interested in winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, this will definitely be the time of year to visit!

How to Prepare / What to Pack

Now that you are briefed on weather in the Black Hills, you can decide which season you’d like to visit in. At any time of the year, we suggested that you bring at least a light jacket. Even if you’re visiting in the summer, you might want to get out in the cooler mornings and evenings, and you’ll be glad you had some layers. Obviously, if you’re visiting us during the winter months, you’ll want a heavier jacket, sturdy pants, and snow boots.

Another universal recommendation is sunscreen! You might not think about getting a sunburn in the middle of winter, but as the sun’s rays reflect off the fresh white snow, you might be surprised that you return to your rental with a bit of a burn! You should ideally be wearing sunscreen every day, and you definitely don’t want to ruin your getaway with a painful sunburn. Along the same lines, we recommend hats and sunglasses to keep you protected from the sun throughout the year.

If you’re visiting during late spring or early summer, you might want to bring an umbrella or raincoat. May and June tend to bring rain to the area, typically in the form of mid-afternoon thunderstorms. Having an umbrella at your disposal can keep you dry if you happen to get caught in a shower, and it’s a small addition to add to your suitcase.
