There are tons of interesting events in the area to get you in the mood for Christmas, and they’re all just minutes away from our lodges near Rapid City. Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend Christmas in the Black Hills.

Historic Towns at Christmas

Historic Deadwood, SD downtown in winter || Executive Lodging

Christmastime allows the local towns to truly get into the spirit with the most gorgeous decorations you’ve ever seen. Take Deadwood, for example. This town’s history goes all the way back to the 1876 Black Hills Gold Rush. You can see how the town embraces its history all year long, but it transforms itself into a winter wonderland at Christmastime. Come check out the beautiful Main Street buildings, enjoy a meal in one of the lunchrooms, or start your Christmas shopping early.

Another fun Christmas destination is the town of Sturgis. Come visit the city to check out attractions like the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, stop into the Old Fort Meade Museum to learn about the history, or just stand in awe of the gorgeous mountains and canyons.

Christmas Nights of Light

Christmas Nights of Light in downtown Rapid City is the perfect family-friendly activity for the season. Storybook Island is turned into a winter wonderland that you simply have to see to believe. Come grab a hot drink while you stroll through the park and take in the beauty of the Christmas lights. You’ll also be able to let your children meet Santa and give him their Christmas lists!

The Christmas Nights of Light takes place in Storybook Island, located at 1301 Sheridan Lake Road in Rapid City. This event runs throughout the month of December from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. each night. Admission is just $2 per person.

The Famous Black Hills Spruce Christmas Tree

On your Black Hills Christmas vacation, you simply can’t miss checking out the famous Black Hills Spruce Christmas tree. This is one of the most popular Christmas tree types across the world, and it’s native to our area! The Black Spruce has shorter and softer needles than what you’ll find on Colorado Blue Spruces. They also have stiff branches that are great for holding all of your special ornaments. There’s just something about wandering through a Christmas tree farm that will put you in the spirit.
