The Black Hills has approx. 350 miles of designated and groomed trails for snowmobiles that are maintained by a full time grooming staff.
Although snowmobiling is permitted on most parts of the 1.2 million acre Black Hills National Forest; forbidden areas include active logging areas, most private property and cross-country ski complexes.

The snowmobile season opens on December 1, however, the Snowmobiling Trail grooming starts Dec. 15. Snowmobiles operated in the Black Hills must have a SD license or properly licensed out of state snowmobiles may be operated in SD. A temporary 5-day S.D. license is available for $40 and $10/year for instate licensed snowmobiles. Licenses/permits are available at most pit stops, county courthouses or other license agents.
