The Black Hills has approx. 350 miles of designated and groomed trails for snowmobiles that are maintained by a full-time grooming staff.

Although snowmobiling is permitted on most parts of the 1.2 million-acre Black Hills National Forest; forbidden areas include active logging areas, most private property, and cross-country ski complexes.

Snowmobile Trail Conditions

The snowmobile season opens on December 1, however, the Snowmobiling Trail grooming starts Dec. 15. Snowmobiles operated in the Black Hills must have an SD license or properly licensed out of state snowmobiles may be operated in SD. A temporary 5-day S.D. license is available for $40 and $10/year for instate licensed snowmobiles. Licenses/permits are available at most pit stops, county courthouses or other license agents.
