Here are a few of our favorite local joints!

Black Hills Burger and Bun Co.

As the name suggests, this eatery is the perfect place to go if you’re in the mood for a mouthwatering burger. You can start with specialties like fried green tomatoes or cheese curds before picking from their specialty burger options. Options include the Texan, the Hawaiian, the Black Hills Blues, or the Fungi. Got a vegetarian in your group? You’ll find three black bean burgers on the menu! If you’re not in the mood for a burger, you can sample some of the delicious land or fish options. It’s all served amid a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere that will guarantee an exciting night with your crew.

Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. is located at 441 Mt. Rushmore Road in Custer. They are open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and for dinner Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Skogen Kitchen

If you’re looking for something a bit more innovative and upscale, Skogen Kitchen is the place to be. The name of this restaurant translates to “the forest” in Norwegian, and the beautiful surroundings of the Black Hills have become the inspiration for the menu. Here, you’ll be able to sample some truly unique offerings, including duck breast, roasted beef cheeks, house-made ravioli, bigeye tuna, and more. Finish your meal with vanilla gelato, double chocolate tart, or select a delectable dessert paired with port wine. When it comes to unique restaurants in the Black Hills, this establishment is definitely at the top of the list.

Skogen Kitchen is located at 29 North 5th Street in Custer. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Desperados

One of the most popular kid-friendly restaurants in the Black Hills is Desperados, a welcoming establishment serving lunch and dinner with a Western twist. The building holds quite a bit of history, built back in 1885 (before South Dakota even became a state!). On the menu, guests can find all kinds of classic favorites including burgers, fish options, pasta, steaks, and more. If you’re feeling adventurous, try this salmon sandwich or the buffalo! No matter what you select, you can rest assured that it’s all been prepared to order with the best top-quality ingredients.

Tally’s Silver Spoon

At Tally’s Silver Spoon, the staff prides themselves on offering “modern cuisine in an upscale contemporary setting,”. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! Visiting guests can expect to experience a mouthwatering, locally-inspired meal in a welcoming setting perfect for the entire family. If you come in on the weekends, you’ll even get to enjoy live music while you dine! One unique thing about Tally’s is the Indecision Menu. If your entire table agrees, you can have the staff choose your meal of anywhere from 2 to 5 courses! Of course, you can also pick your dinner with options like classic alfredo pasta, the Black Hills buffalo burger, roast chicken velouté, and more. 

Tally’s Silver Spoon is located at 530 6th Street in Rapid City. They are open daily from 7 a.m. to close. 

Powder House

If you want an authentic taste of South Dakota, Powder House is a great option. This destination is a laid-back and family-friendly eatery that specializes in regional cuisine featuring local ingredients such as buffalo and other wild game. You’ll also find a wide range of fish and pasta dishes on the menu if you want something a little more familiar. Some of the most popular menu options include bootlegger chicken, BBQ buffalo short ribs, buffalo stew, stuffed quail, and prime rib. If you’ve got a vegetarian in your group, don’t worry; there are several offerings for them as well! 

Powder House is located at 24125 US-16A in Keystone. They are open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Alpine Inn

When paying a visit to the Alpine Inn, you’re in for incredible history and an impressive meal. This venue is situated in a historic building that was built in 1886! The menu, though, is much more modern and is sure to impress any guest. Here, guests can choose from some genuinely great menu options to enjoy, such as bacon-wrapped filet mignon, Kaes spaetzle primavera, schnitzel, and more. You might not think that you can find authentic and delicious European cuisine in the heart of the Black Hills, but Alpine Inn will prove you wrong! 

Alpine Inn is located at 133 Main Street in Hill City. They are open for lunch Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dinner hours vary by season but always start at 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. 

The Custer Wolf

It’s hard to find a more welcoming and laid-back hangout spot than The Custer Wolf. This establishment is great for enjoying a fun meal with your family or an exciting night out with your friends. On the menu, you’ll find all kinds of incredible cuisine that take inspiration from the local area, such as Cowboy Caviar, shredded buffalo, walleye chermoula, and more. In addition to the fantastic food, The Custer Wolf also holds all kinds of fun events throughout the year, so there’s sure to be something unique going on during your vacation! 

The Custer Wolf is located at 506 Mt. Rushmore Road in Custer. They are open Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Colonial House

Finally, Colonial House is a destination you don’t want to miss. This family-run restaurant has been a favorite of locals and visitors alike since 1981, and it’s no secret why. The atmosphere is second to none in terms of how welcoming and friendly it is! Come in for lunch or dinner to enjoy favorites like the creamy pesto linguine pasta, fried shrimp, top sirloin, ocean salmon, the Big Kahuna burger, and more. Be sure to stop by the Colonial Bake Shop to pick out a cinnamon roll, pie, or another dessert! 

Colonial House is located at 2315 Mt. Rushmore Road in Rapid City. They are open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
