Mickelson Trail was originally the Burlington Northern Line Railroad that took trains from Edgemont to Deadwood. Starting in Deadwood and ending in Edgemont, the 109 mile trail with most of it not exceeding a 4% grade is primarily crushed limestone and gravel. It features 100 converted railroad bridges, 4 rock tunnels, and 15 trailheads.

The trail features easy access for all ages and all abilities can enjoy. Bicyclists, hikers, and horseback riders can explore spruce and ponderosa pine forests. It is mainly National Forest service with portions going through private land allowing access on the trail only in these areas.
