Hunting In The Black Hills – What You Need To Know
Whether you love bow-hunting or prefer hunting with a rifle, you’ll have plenty of hunting opportunities in the Black Hills.
Typically, peak hunting season in the Black Hills for big game is in the autumn, both in the mountainous regions of the Black Hills and the lowland prairies. Deer hunting is the most popular during November. You can find prairie whitetail deer, prairie, and even prong-horned antelope in the Black Hills! However, these are usually off-limits for non-residents, though there are occasional exceptions.
You can also hunt quite a bit of other wild game, including:
- Wild turkeys
- Prairie dogs
- Sharptail grouse
- Ringneck pheasants
- Gray partridge
- Mourning doves
While there are elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats present, only South Dakota residents are allowed to enter drawings for hunting licenses.
Speaking of hunting licenses, you’ll need a license to hunt legally for most game in South Dakota. Hunting licenses can be purchased at most local outdoor retailers, but you can also apply online for your desired license at the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks website!

Spearfish Creek in Spearfish Canyon is another very popular destination for anglers, featuring a wide river that averages 29 feet. It’s long enough that you can usually find a place all for yourself, and fish your heart away!
Naturally, you’ll need to buy a fishing license to fish legally in South Dakota. Prices are reasonable, and you can purchase a license either at a fly shop or other retailer or online.
