Broken Boot Gold Mine

Broken Boot Gold Mine is an excellent option for an authentic experience. You can learn all about the history of the underground mines of Black Hills and even try your own hand at gold panning. You can follow the paths of the ore cars in the century-old shafts of the mine, and walk in the footsteps of miners who navigated by candlelight. Tours begin every 30 minutes, so you can choose any time of the day to stop by.

Broken Boot Gold Mine is located at 1200 Pioneer Way in Deadwood. Tours run daily from 8 a.m. until 6 pm. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Black Hills Mining Museum

For a bit of history in your vacation, the Black Hills Mining Museum is a great stop. This nonprofit educational corporation presents tons of exhibits and activities to get the whole family excited about the history of the Black Hills. You can stick to the museum on the main floor to observe incredible artifacts from the Gold Rush, or you can take the guided simulated mine tour for a more interactive experience. Either way, the Black Hills Mining Museum is a fascinating addition to your South Dakota vacation.

The Black Hills Mining Museum is located at 323 West Main Street US-85 in Lead. They’re open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 4 pm. from May through September, and winter hours are by reservation only.

Wade’s Gold Mill

For a hands-on journey into the Gold Rush days, visit Wade’s Gold Mill. You’ll be able to pan for gold and take a tour of the antique mining equipment. Wade’s Gold Mill presents a look into the history of gold mining as well as presenting what modern milling looks like. The interactive exhibits and tours are perfect to get the whole family in on the fun.

Wade’s Gold Mill is located at 12401 Deerfield Road in Hill City. They are open daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. during the summer months.

Big Thunder Gold Mine

Big Thunder Gold Mine is the perfect place to spend the entire day. Not only can you take a walking tour of the gold mine, but you can also do on-site gold panning, tour the mining museum, and grab a bite to eat in the restaurant. One of the best things about Big Thunder Gold Mine is its emphasis on accessibility. All of the facilities are well-lit and do not have stairs, making them easy to navigate for people with disabilities and wheelchairs. 

Big Thunder Gold Mine is located at 604 Blair Street in Keystone. They are open daily from April through October, though hours change depending on the month.
